Industry Overview

In case you missed it, the HVAC industry is on fire and there are no signs of it slowing down. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the HVAC market in the US was valued at 11.5 billion dollars according to Mordor Intelligence’s industry reports. By 2026 that number is projected to reach 17 billion dollars. That’s a projected industry growth of 6.4% from 2021-2026.

Outstanding Job Outlook, Stability, and Security

According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020, there were an estimated 380,000 HVAC jobs in the United States, with a projected growth rate of 5% from 2020 to 2030. There are currently more HVAC job openings than there are candidates able to fill those roles.

Another factor contributing to a favorable job outlook is that over 50% of HVAC technicians are over 40 years old. A large percentage of those currently working in the industry will be retiring in the next 10-20 years. The industry needs young technicians to replace an aging HVAC workforce.

While many other industries & job positions are seeing layoffs and downsizing, HVAC companies are constantly seeking qualified employees to accommodate the overall growth of the industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate of HVAC techs in the United States was an impressive 2.81% in 2019.

Minimal Student Debt

If you’re anything like me, you’ve likely heard (over and over) how important it was to go to college and pursue a degree. While I am certainly happy with my decision to earn my degree, let’s be real, college is expensive and it’s certainly not the only way to make a good living. Everyone is going to college, but very few high school grads are developing a skill in the trades.

A shortage of workers in the trades has pushed wages quite high in recent years. Fewer workers in the trades make it far less competitive when trying to land a job. The cost of earning a 4-year degree is substantially higher than attending a trade school. According to Trent Hamm, Founder of The Simple Dollar, students who attend trade school graduate with an average of $10,000 of debt, while students who attend college graduate with an average of $36,327 in student debt.

It’s Rewarding

It’s no secret that being comfortable at home is important. Working in HVAC can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling knowing you make a difference in people’s lives when it comes to being safe and comfortable at home.

One of the most meaningful feelings our HVAC technicians have is when we get a call from an elderly couple, a family with a newborn, or someone with a medical condition. For those customers, having operational heating and cooling isn’t just important, it’s essential. Nothing feels better than getting these customers’ equipment back up and running. To them, you’re an absolute hero!

Variety

Each day on the job is different from the last. You’ll have the opportunity to meet all kinds of different people, work on a variety of HVAC equipment, and benefit from working in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Each customer’s home is unique, and with that comes unique challenges and problems that need to be solved. Solutions are not always straightforward. Sometimes the best solution requires both creativity as well as technical know-how.

Additionally, a top-notch tech isn’t one who solely relies on his technical/mechanical skills. The finest techs in the industry understand that customer service is equally as important. Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with each client are vital to the success of each job.
